Fred and Roberta

Fred Sewid woke the morning of March 1st and realized immediately that he was retired.  Officially.  Adum Brate would be flying completely solo today.  The young man could handle it, Fred knew.  But he felt a bit at loose ends.  Shirley was still mayor of Cedar Point.  And so his first day as a retiree ... he was on his own.

He decided to spend the day at home.  Not making an appearance outside of his apartment at all.  But he was still at loose ends.  But such was his life these days.

As evening came on, he was glad he had survived the day and calmly talked to Shirley, assuring him he had not died, as he had long predicted he would when he retired.  But even Shirley sounded sad.

Because of Roberta.

After dinner, but before the night grew too late, he turned on his laptop and opened up the Skype program.  Gwen had added him to her account but had also added her mother.  Roberta.  And Fred noticed that she was online.

With a slight pause ... he initiated a Skype call with his daughter.

Roberta had just settled onto the couch with her after dinner cup of tea when her iPad started to give off that familiar Skype ring. She set the tea down and picked it up and then her eyes widened at the name that was calling. how the hell did he get her info? She had her privacy settings on high. Hesitantly she took a breath and then answered, holding out the tablet so she was visible. Roberta was the spitting image of a younger Shirley, her long dark hair swept into a messy bun and her glasses perched a little low on her nose the way Shirley's often slid. She blinked at Fred, face as it appeared, her father's face "Hi...."

Fred was always taken .. had always been taken ... with how much Roberta looked like her mother.  Ironically, had she looked more like him .. this day may never have come.  He inhaled deeply.  "Hello.  Thank you for accepting the call."  he begins.  "Gwen set this up for me.  Dragging me into the modern age.  You're actually my second Skype call after the test to Gwen."  he isn't smiling, but he isn't frowning.  He is .. neutral.  Old habits died hard.

Roberta looks sideways and sighs into forming her daughter's name "Gwen...." She looks back up "OK. What can I do for you...Fred?" She'd definitely nowhere near being ready to call him anything else yet.

Fred doesn't even flinch at her addressing him as Fred.  "I am here to talk to you about your mother."  he tells her.  "And to own up to my part in all of this.  She ...."  he stops himself.  "I'd told her I didn't want children.  It wasn't exactly what I MEANT, but .. interpersonal communications wasn't my strong suit back then."

Roberta inhales, stiffening a bit in her posture. Her gaze on him becomes intense like she's meeting him head on. Her temper might have a bit to do with Fred's genetics if one was so inclined to think that way "Go on then...."

Fred watches her face and suppresses  grin.  She's an intense one.  "At the time, I was ready to give up law and run for mayor of Alexandra.  She and I were happy .. well I was happy, anyway.  But when she brought up our future I just out and told her I didn't want children."  he sighs his regret.  "At the time, I wasn't sure I could sell an Aboriginal mayor to Alexandra .. never mind TWO of them."  he blows out a breath.  "Looking back ... I do believe she was testing the waters with me .... and my reaction ... scared her off to someone who would .. be a father to her child."

Roberta digests this "OK, so that's you. I still don't know why SHE didn't tell me, or my Dad, well the one who raised me anyways.....she lied to three people Fred, about something REALLY important!" He voice begins to raise at the last part and her eyes flash with the temper.

Fred watches her and sighs.  She was feeling anger he'd felt for years.  Decades.  "I think for yrs she simply did not know.  I wasn't positive.  It wasn't like it is today where you can pick up a paternity test up at the store.  But when I saw you ... oh you were 6 years old ...  I knew.  Did the math.  But I didn't confront her until you were 11."  he scoffs.  "It was the beginning of many ... oh so cool fights.  I think ... I think she may have known, but by then .. even then she was afraid.  And I can be ... "  he seems to search for the word.  "Difficult."

Roberta sighs, thinking and then huffs "She says that about me too....but it's not reason to keep up a lie. Mother's never lied to me about ANYTHING else. I don't know what to do with this. I'm sorry. I'm really trying. Brad made me go see a counselor even....."

Fred sighs and nods.  "It drove me crazy too."  he admits.  "But at the same time.  When you were born ... it was hard enough to get married and have a baby in seven or eight months after that, betraying that the baby was conceived out of wedlock.  And Shirley ... she needs security.  And ... Elliot was more security to her than I was ... I suppose."  he sighs.  He'd been a lawyer.  Elliot a teacher.  "She was scared.  And she ... made a snap decision .. to not be lonely .. maybe to take a job at me.  To give you a father."  he huffs.  "It's been a rough bunch of decades for me, too.  Second guessing every decision I made from that day on."  he blows out a breath.  "Hell, I can't even say I would have been a better father.  I don't know.  I never got the chance to find out."  he feels himself losing grip on his temper and he closes his eyes both in the pain of the thought and to get his temper under control, if he can.

Roberta sees the man's emotion and can't not be affected. She blinks hard "Elliot was good to me if it's any consolation....I know he wasn't you but....god when I think about Mom's first husband....it could have been way worse right? I read that tabloid about you guys. Gwen left it open on my.....how often do you talk to Gwen anyway? "She looks suspicious now, like her daughter is in on a conspiracy with her estranged biological father.

In truth, Gwen is. She likes her Grandpa Fred and relates to him better than her other Grandparents. He talks to her like an adult and encourages her. Gwen would love nothing more than her mother both welcoming him into the family and reconciling with her Gran. She loves her Gran to bits.

Fred gets himself under control.  He thinks of Elliot.  "I know he was."  he admits.  "We didn't get along, but my problems with him were more about his hiding that he was gay."  a small growl of anger erupts from him.   "Sinclair."  there is unmistakable hatred in his voice.  "I piss on his grave every chance I get."  he confesses.  In a way, Drake Sinclair was the start of it all.  He and Shirley had fought and she sought comfort in his arms.  A minor fight turned into a break-up and she had married that bastard.  Fred suspected that Shirley's miscarriage was no accident.  But Roberta shifts the subject to Gwen and Fred can not help but smile.  "That is a good kid you have there."  he tells her.  "That article hurt Shirley more than it hurt me.  I'm used to them comparing me to everyone from Atilla the Hun to Donald Trump."  he pauses.  "She called me a couple of times a week and then decided I needed to upgrade from my old flip phone.  But she was kind enough to walk me through the damn thing."

Both Fred's anger about her mother's abusive ex and his adoration of Gwen are starting to soften Roberta's demeanor. Clearly this man, her father, really loves her mom and always has. Circumstances were just...well shitty. She lets out a genuine laugh "Gwen's good with the tech and anything mechanical. I have to say, I get why Dad hid his sexuality, especially in the era he was raised in....well you all were.......I don't know what to call you Fred. I mean I know now you are my father but I grew up with a different one.....This is going to take some getting used too......And Jesus Christ...I'm not Haida......" She groans "I spent half my life learning the language. Oh well...I'm helping it stay alive."

Fred sighs.  "Oh, I understand it, too."  he admits.  "I got angry because instead of just being a man who never married, he took a wife and had my child.  Which was doubly interesting and irritating, since she and I are both Semiahmoo and arguably should have been together."  he snorts.  "I'm the one who never married."  he sighs and then nods.  "I don't know either, Roberta."  he admits.  "But I do know that just because I gave you my DNA doesn't make me a father in anything but biology.  That was one of the first lessons I learned at the Residential School.  DNA does not make a parent."  he smiles and switches to his native tongue.  "Keeping the language alive helps keep US alive."

Roberta brightens and says back in Semiahmoo "Thank the Creator. It hasn't all been a lie.I am sorry for your hardships." She laughs and switches back to English with a guilty look "Is mom OK? I do miss her....."

Fred smiles at the words.  He had never allowed himself to forget the language, and often spoke it ... but mostly only to himself over his life.  Looking at his screen, he sees the guilt and hears that Shirley was indeed missed by her daughter.  "Well, she is trying to organize an election in that democracy of hers."  he teases.  "I retired, effective today.  Put a good young man in charge.  Irishman.  Used to be the police chief.  But Shirley."  he chuckles.  "Is doing it very fairly.  They love her, but I am HOPING that they don't love her os much that no one steps up to take her place."  he pauses.  "Once that's done ... she'll be moving here ... with me."  he pauses again.  "I'll marry her, if she'll have me."  he admits.

Roberta gets a little teary eyed and smiles through it as a few escape and she wipes her face under her glasses "Considering she brought you here on Christmas, I'm sure she'll have you. Oh my god that town will protest..." She laughs and then looks like she's plotting "Does Mom know you're calling me?"

Fred is touched by the tears.  Then he chuckles.  "Well they can protest all they want."  he jibes.  "If I didn't give MY town what they wanted by dying in office, THEY can't have what they want which is probably for Shirley to be mayor another 40 years."  he chuckles and then sighs.  "No, she does NOT know."  he tells her.  "She wanted YOU to come back to her, and barring that, she wanted to be the one to come to you.  But ... well ... I don't know if being stubborn and temperamental is a genetic trait, but you dig in your heels JUST like I do."  he sighs.  "And I know what it feels like to let that keep you away from someone you love for decade after decade."  his voice softens.  "You need to forgive your mother her circumstances.  She doesn't have another 60 or more years in her, which is what I wasted being stubborn and temperamental."

Roberta sniffs a little and rolls her head to one side "I know. I'm not going to do that. But I'm going to buy a plane ticket and go work this out with her in person. So...um...let me surprise her. You can join us if you like. If I do it on spring break I could even bring Gwen." She says with a smile "Simon already has a job lined up for that week and Brad can be here for him."

Fred nods.  "Good.  I won't tell her  And I would love to join ... either for the whole thing, or after."  he grins.  "Gwen has the address.  Just tell me when and I'll make sure she stays put."

Roberta laughs "OK, well I have your Skype now but do you want to text me a phone number too? Might be easier. And we're talking the last week of March. I'll call Mom before that so she's not thinking I hate her. I just like to have the big conversations face to face......I'm glad you called Fred."

Fred leans forward and types in his phone number.  "There.  See ... I am NOT a Luddite."  he proclaims.  "That would be good.  Soften the shock of just showing up.  And I'm glad I called too.  I can still out stubborn the stubborn.  Makes me feel alive."  he winks.  "Now you take care and tell Gwen I haven't gotten any viruses.  She may be disappointed."

Roberta smirks "Well I'm nothing compared to Simon when he gets in it. It all comes from you? Because Brad is pretty much descended from sweet little mouse people." she laughs again "I'll tell her. You take care."

Fred chuckles.  "Well, you got Shirley's looks.  What's me is all internal."  he nods.  "I will.  Let me know when you're on your way and I'll set it all up for you.  Good night, Roberta."  and he reaches to cut the call, leaning back.  That went better than he'd hoped.  And it was a good sign to him.

Anna in Alexandra - Anna, Gabby and Phoenix

Gabrielle Rousseau tosses her empty coffee mug away as they head from the ferry to the shores of Alexandra island.  She didn't come her as often as she wanted to, but that was changing.  Looking down the street she inhales.  "This place feels good."  she announces and looks at Anna beside her.  "Where were you planning to shop?"  she wonders.  Then her phone jangles in her pocket and she takes it out, looking at it intently.

Anna walks with Gabby, hoisting her pack a little on her back. She was still sipping her now cold coffee a bit "Been awhile for me too. Seriously, almost a day on the ferry since I went to Theta first...." she laughs "But I found the out of print book. I need a cake from Earthcakes. I did call ahead......" she cuts off as Gabby focuses on her phone.

Gabby is nodding as she reads the text message and replies.  "Well, I am glad we got to run into each other."  she holds up her phone before she pockets it.  "And I now have the day free!"  she announces.  "Some kind of admin ... something ... so I need to come back later to examine the school here."  she touches Anna's shoulder.  "So we can go to Earthcakes together!"  she exclaims, as if they are headed to a grand party.  "Gods, I have missed you!"

Anna smiles a bit, not totally sure how to align with Gabby's energy, but accepting it as the kindness it seems to be. "Thanks. That's nice to hear. So where do you....and I assume Sky? Live right now anyway?"

Gabby smiles and walks along the street.  "We're living on Theta right now, but you know ... we get around a lot.  Here.  We'll even going to work in Cedar Point soon."  she grins.  "It's been good times, really.  How about you?"  she pauses.  "I ... got the feeling you weren't happy about me and Sky.  Are you with someone else now?"

Anna sigh as Gabby calls her out on the truth " It was a long time ago so I got over it. I know you and Sky are wired differently than I am. I'm a monogamist. So the whole thing was just something I had to process and let go. The fact that you're both still happy and in each other's lives means I made the right choice. I do care about you both. There have been a few but no one right now. I'm not lonely though. I have amazing friends." She smiles genuinely and inwardly decides to not even get into the issues around Phoenix and the whole dynamic. "What's the work in Cedar Point? I can give you a discount at the B&B on a room if you need one."

Gabby nods.  "Yea.  I guess we're ...  I don't know."  she grins.  "But yes.  We're happy and still not bored with each other so ... win win, right?"  she shrugs.  "I'm going to be working on the school there?  And a room might be nice.  But if you'd be uncomfortable with us around.  Neither of us wants that, Anna.  Really, we don't."

Anna smiles and reassures her "Gabby, I got through it. It's OK NOW. I want you guys to be happy. So come get a deal." She teases her.

Gabby smiles.  "I thought so."  she sighs and shrugs.  "Well rest assured we are."  she heads down Water street.  "I DO love these large areas of trees.  Be a treat to explore again."  she looks eager and happy.

Anna looks around "It is pretty. I used to come here more when I was in high school. We had track meets and stuff with Alexandra school. and I have a couple of cousins here on my Dad's side. It's the twin town to Cedar Point. Apparently as it turns out, because the mayors have been in love for years....partially at least."

Gabby looks intrigued as they pass Perkatory and heat up to another literal level of the island.  "That's very cool!  I can sort of relate.  Drifting away and then back together.  Probably different.  Not as romantic.  Are they back together again?"

Anna nods "Sounds like it. It was a tabloid at first but I'm friends with her niece for ours. So yeah....I think he retired and I heard a hint she's about to call an election....don't quote me on that till it happens. I can't imagine any other mayor but Shirley Douglas. She's my neighbour too, nice lady....'

Gabby smiles.  "That's sweet.  I wish them happily ever after.  Are they older?  I'd guess so, if you can't imagine another mayor."  she approaches Earthcakes and reaches for the door handle.

Phoenix Fire Moon stands at the counter, looking contemplatively down at the offerings.

"They are both seniors. It's both cute and a little gross if I think too much...." She cuts off seeing the unmistakable blonde dreads and says in surprise "Oh he's here already..." She inhales and puts on a smile. All the awkward conversations were going to happen in one day after all, minus Sky. She walks through the door after Gabby "Hi Phoenix." She offers a little quietly.

Gabby giggles a little.  "Maybe we'll learn age is what you make of it once we get there."  she moves in and sees Phoenix and smiles broadly.  "That beautiful, beautiful man."  she calls to him and opens her arms.

Phoenix turns and sees them.  "Gabby!"  he heads for her.  "And ANNA!"  his blue eyes widen in surprise.  "Oh the planets must be aligned today!"  he pulls Gabby into a very familiar hug, followed by a deep, soul searching kiss.  Then he breaks it and turns to Anna, opening his arms, as if expecting the exact same from her.

Anna gulps and looks away briefly at Phoenix and Gabby's greeting and then when he opens his arms to her she gives a little laugh and does reach to hug him but carefully turns her face as she leans in to avoid any possibility of a kiss "It's nice to see you Phoenix."

Gabby watches all of this with an amused grin.  But all in all it was a very good day for her.  The only thing she was missing was Sky.

Phoenix chuckles into the hug and does not go in for a kiss.  He holds her by the shoulders, however and looks at her.  "Still shy Anna."  he caresses both of her arms.  "Lets sit and drink and make some merry."  he suggests.  "Coffee and conversation at least if I can't get love from you both."  he teases.

Anna has to laugh at his boldness. Still Phoenix. She darts a look at Gabby and shakes her head smiling "I don't think you're lacking for love. And yes to coffee and conversation. I have a cake to pick up at the end of that." She gestures to a table by the window and look between the two of them "How about this one?" She graciously steps out of Phoenix's hold on her shoulders and arms and shuffles in it's direction.

Gabby smiles and heads for the table with Anna.  "If they have some kind of mint tea, please?"  she takes out her card and hands it to Phoenix.  She sits and offers her hand to Anna.  "It's a day of reunion for you, Anna."  she almost announces.

Phoenix takes the card and looks at Anna.  "What can I get you, beautiful?"  he wonders aloud.

Anna chuckles, drops her bag by a chair and pulls a 5 out of her pocket for Phoenix "Mint tea actually sounds good. I've had a LOT of coffee today." She blushes at the compliment "It'll go to my head if you keep that up mister."

Gabby beams and sits back, looking out of the window.  It is turning into a good day.

Phoenix winks at Anna.  "I hope it does indeed."  he admits, taking card and bill from the women and turning to the counter.  "Three mint teas, please Zilpha."  he orders from an elderly woman.

Anna just sighs at Phoenix but smiles. This was more attention she'd had from anyone in some time, between these two flattering folks and she's trying not to overthink it coming from him. She sat down with Gabby and followed her gaze "Snow's melting. I saw a daffodil trying to reach a shoot for the sky yesterday. You can feel spring trying."

Gabby smiles and looks out of the window.  "It really IS!"  she proclaims.  "Theta is in such a state of flux, I can't stand it anymore."  she smirks.  "Maybe we'll move to Cedar Point."  she quickly reaches out to touch her hand.  "Just teasing!"

Phoenix orders three teas and soon brings them to the table.  "Oh, if you do that, I'll have to invade!"

Anna giggles at Gabby "It would not be a terrible thing on either count." She accepts her tea from Phoenix "Thank you.Gabby says you have some sort of record shop here. How's that going?"

Gabby grins, happy with that statement.  First she blows on and then sips at her tea, listening to Phoenix's answer.

Phoenix nods.  "It goes well.  Record is probably not the right word."  he sighs deeply.  "Mostly CD's and I am experimenting with things like MP3 sales.  The brick and mortar is dying, I'm afraid."  he sounds genuinely sad.  "Everything is online.  No one gets out to nature anymore."  he shrugs.

Anna smiles at Gabby and then refutes Phoenix respectfully "But lots of bands are going old school with vinyl releases. It's a resurgence I thought. The last folk fest at Mission, there was tons of vinyl...course I don't have a player but you know..... And it's been a tough winter for BC. We're used to having our gardens planted by now." She says with an eye roll.

Gabby nods.  "It's true."  she smiles.  "Granted, it WAS you, Phoenix who got me to replace my paper books with electronic copies."  she looks at Anna.  "Of course my place was a fire hazard and I didn't want to accidentally burn the place down lighting up a joint or something."  she giggles.  Then she perks up.  "That reminds me.  I want to start a kitchen garden BUT."  she holds up a finger.  "I want it in containers, so if Sky and I move .. we can take it with us."

Phoenix listens to them.  "I still have SOME records . but yes, Gabs .. you were becoming a book hoarder.  I love you, but it WAS a hazard."  he strokes his chin.  "What are you planning to grow?"  he wonders.  "I am trying to stay on the right side of the law, myself.  But I have herb seeds for you, Gabby Gardner."

Anna listens to them both and shrugs at them "My Dad just inter-plants it with Oregano and tells the people it's more of the same. I honestly think the cops have better things to pursue....but I know they have to tow the line on it. But on the legal side, I do have chives and mint I can give you cutting from Gabby."

Gabby grins.  "There's an idea.  And it would be for personal use.  Sky'd be his own best customer."  she laughs.  "Does his girlfriend share his stash?"  she teases.  "Oh, I'd love to get a head start, sure.  Yes, please."

Phoenix arches his brows.  "Wait your Dad has a GIRLFRIEND?"  he laughs and claps his hands.  "There's hope for the rest of us!" he proclaims.

Anna laughs at Gabby and then makes a face at Phoenix's question "Ish...it's complicated. She's kind of......well I dunno...you probably know her. I betcha SHE has a record player." she laughs "It's Sunflower Meadow. But they're off again, on again. I'm not sure if tonight's dinner is in an on phase or just as friends. I never know."

Gabby sips her tea, closing her eyes in bliss.  If she had to choose a home based on mint tea ... Alexandra was in the running and then some.

Phoenix brightens.  "I know her."  he admits.  "Good for her!  And nothing wrong with on again, off again.  Look at me and Gabby and Sky.  Sometimes it's all three of us, sometimes just two of us three."  he winks, suggestively.  "Keeps us alive, my dear Anna."

Anna waves the whole thing off "You guys are wired differently, maybe my Dad too....I did that with someone for years. It hurt us a few too many times. The worst and the end was my fault but that's how it went. But he's happier now...he met someone nice." She smiles a bit, genuinely but with a tinge of melancholy. She can't bring herself to talk about more. She might be able to if it was still just Gabby but she and Phoenix had a relationship before she and Sky and she's still untangling part of it in her head to this day.

Gabby looks curious.  "Who?"  she just assumed Anna never considered a polyamorous or swinging lifestyle.

Phoenix also looks curious.  "Yes ... who?"  he wonders.  "And what makes you think your father has many lovers or even ANY besides Sunflower?"

Anna can see where they're going with it all and laughs "I'm talking about one person at a time still, just not consistently because...well sometimes life is just kinda fucked up. And I mean that about my Dad too. Garrett Yamada. Do you remember Steph? She and Tamela visited me on Salt Spring. Tams did not like sleeping in the sod house.... anyhow Steph's brother. Sort of since high school really whenever we were not with anyone else. Then we tried dating and life just got in the way."

Gabby nods.  "Well its not like I have to sleep between Sky and Phoenix."  she protests with a giggle.  "Most of the time its me and Sky.  But others."  she jumps.  Oh God I almost forgot."  and she pulls out her phone and begins to send a text.  "I have to invite Sky ....  you don't mind, do you, Phoenix?  For tonight?  It's been so long."

Phoenix grins.  "I remember.  SO .. maybe you and Garrett will get together and STAY together someday.  Sky and Gabby have, even if now and then I get to play with them, as well."  he says the last while Gabby is texting and beams.  "I was hoping you wouldn't make me ask.  It's always magical when you two stay over."

Anna looks intrigued but still overwhelmed by the plans of the trio and just smiles a little awkwardly at them. She doesn't answer about Garrett. Her feelings for him have faded and it does sound like his connection to Ziven is both genuine and solid. "Say hi to Sky for me. I think we're having dinner at Sunny's farm. I'll crash there and then try and catch an early ferry home."

Gabby smiles.  "I will, but he'll be sorry to have missed you."  she sighs a bit.  "Maybe if we're staying the nights in Cedar Point, we can all have dinner together, then."  she offers.

Phoenix grins and finishes his tea.  "Well, maybe we can all do breakfast, if we don't sleep too late."  he winks.  "I open the store at around tenish."  no specific time for him, but it doesn't hurt his business too much.

Anna shrugs "Ok I'll toss a text at you Gabby when I'm up and about. I probably have to help feed goats."

Gabby smiles.  "See ...  you get fun too."  she giggles.  "That sounds fun.  Feeding the animals."

Phoenix grins.  "It IS.  I help Sunflower as much as I can.  I think she has a sister, but they're a but ... different.  You know.  They have a nephew in town here.  One of the cops."

Anna smiles and shrugs "You mean Sam Wright? Yeah he's my second cousin. Way too small world sometimes. Related on my Dad's side."

Gabby smiles.  "Wow.  That's ... beautiful."  she grins.  "A cop and a hippy ...."  she looks at her phone and beams.  "He'll be on the next ferry."  she sounds excited.

Phoenix grins.  "Well it IS a small world."  he looks at Anna for a long time.  "Beautiful family."  he looks at Gabby.  "I better make it a short day."

Anna watches Gabby and smiles "Well good." Then she looks up to see Phoenix looking at her and hears his reply. She blushes a little and awkwardly smooths her hair "I should get my cake...pardon me." She stands up and heads to the counter.

Gabby watches her head for the counter and, with a sigh, leans into Phoenix and rests her head on his side.

Phoenix gives Gabby a one armed hug, but also looks after Anna.  He missed her, and she probably didn't even know why.

Saturday Casual RP in Alexandra - Hank, Erica, Petey and Judith

Erica BaldwinRussell is walking in almost a shell shocked daze, muttering to herself as if trying to reason something out. She snaps her head up and sees Hank and kind of waves like she's forgotten how to greet other humans "Uh...hi..."

Hank Stanley wanders down 2nd, with o particular goal in mind and sees Erica. "Hi..." he looks at her with concern. "Are you alright?" he asks coming closer. "You look ..... shocked ...." he doesn't want to say 'shocky' but he is looking at her and around. He didn't HEAR an accident.

Erica BaldwinRussell starts laughing nervously "I've just said yes to something completely insane, potentially wonderful, but insane......I don't even know how to tell Jeff......" She blows out a big breath and look at the cement as if seeking it's solidity.

Hank Stanley laughs a little nervously. Well ...as long as it's wonderful." he is still watching her.She may well be in a sort of shock. "May I be the first to congratulate you with .... maybe a treat? Tea? Coffee? Perkatory has the best in town."

Erica BaldwinRussell looks like she might start to hyperventilate "Give me a sec. I just had a job interview and said yes to an offer....for both Jeff and I....but we need to start March 1st.....here, at the Mariner's. That's the only way to secure the jobs. Maybe don't congratulate me yet....It's possible this will kill us with stress...."

Hank Stanley smiles and then lifts his brows. "March .... that's WEDNESDAY." he proclaims, as if she may have made a mistake. "Well, that part is wonderful and .. don't stress." he snorts. "All you have to do is move and get the kids in school. But you have an ace i the hole, Erica." he assures her.Someone walks by and claps Hank on the am as they pass. "Hey Chief." Hank waves a them, absently.

Erica BaldwinRussell glances at the passer by and then exhales heavily "We might need to stay in the Mariner's.....oh god the school. Is there a daycare here?!" She looks alarmed at her own predicament "It is WEDNESDAY!"

Hank Stanley smiles. "I think you need a drink in you." he tells her. "Not alcohol. I honestly think you might be in shock." he chuckles. "But there a few available apartments here. And yes, there's day care and babysitters. If it's a good enough job, I'll babysit myself on my days off. Now ... relax. It's totally doable." he begins to look around, trying to remember what's available and what's not. "First things first. An apartment, right?"

Erica BaldwinRussell nods, reeling "We're going to need to sleep her by Tuesday night. We can bring the camping gear for the first week.....we have to sell our house.....I need to call Jeff...then I can drink something....alcohol might be a good idea." She laughs. Erica  digs her phone out her purse and dials and then waits. She puts ona sheepish smile as if she was saying it to Jeff's face "Hi honey, I've lost my mind. But do you wanna work together again? Because I just said yes to that Mariner's chain......Yeah the weird guy with the peacock.......mmmhm....there's just a little catch.....if we want it...we have have to start on March 1st." She waits for a long pause and then asks "Are you still there? OK. Well I've said yes....but we can undo it if you want to think and call me back......." She purses her lips and than laughs "Are you sure? I love you......I'm going to go have a drink. No it's OK I ran into Hank." She listens and then holds the phone aside "Is Mom here?"

Hank Stanley smiles. "Might not be the worst idea." he teases. "Let me think." he looks around again. "There's the townhouses. And some apartment's in the bottoms. That's your best bet with your family just staring out." he considers and looks westward. He listens to Erica's end of the conversation. "Yes. She is. Working." he chuckles. "The honeymoon is over." he teases. "Drinks on me." he motions towards the police station. "Statutes should be open by now, if you still want that drink. Petey serves some good food too."

Erica BaldwinRussell almost nuzzles her phone at whatever Jeff just replied with and sighs "I know. I'll see you tonight and we'll figure it all out. Hank has some ideas of where we can look. I'm going to quit tomorrow and then and come back here and talk to some real estate folks, landlords and the school and daycare.......OK I'll call you when I leave. Bye." She looks at Hank "Where's the bar?"

Hank Stanley chuckles. "We this way ma'am." he nods in the right direction. "Might be able to take care of ONE of your problems, at least." he heads over, texting as he goes.

Erica BaldwinRussell pushes the door opens and holds it for Hank "OK....oh wait this is the place with no wine right?" She laughs reading the names and then smiles at the bartender.

Hank Stanley laughs. "This is the place." he motions to a table. "Hey Petey! How's business?" he leans in towards Erica. "Two things on the menu ... fish and chips or Lamb Stew .... and of course two desserts. Pete's a bar man. What can you do?"

Peter OBrian looks up from polishing the bar. They've jsut opened so he isn't actually expecting anyone. He beams. "Hank! Business is booming now you're here." he moves around the bar to the table. "New friend?" he asks, cautiously. "And where's Judith?" he wonders. He knows his friend so he isn't thinking hanky panky.

Erica BaldwinRussell pulls out her phone again but doesn't start texting or calling yet "Were you texting HER Hank?" She turns to the bartender "Hi I'm Erica. I'm Judith's daughter."

Hank Stanley chuckles. "Yes, I was." he looks at Peter during the introduction. "Erica may become a new Alexandra resident." he tells him. "You have any empty apartments? It's Erica and her husband, plus two girls."

Peter OBrian smiles. "Well, good to met you, then. I'm Peter O'Brian." he pauses at the table and considers. "There are that three bedroom across from my place." he tells them both. "It's right by the hotel. For good or ill." he laughs.

Erica BaldwinRussell's eyes go wide "Oh my god....that's almost perfect....do you mean the Mariners?" She looks between Hank and Peter hopefully.

Hank Stanley nods. "Pete here owns two of the three buildings. It's a 60 second commute." he considers Petey. "What do you need from em?" he asks with a raised brow. "Security and all that nonsense? They need to move in by Tuesday."

Peter OBrian nods. "Yea. There's the Mariners and the Olin, but ... I mean the Mariners." he looks at Hank. "For someone I don't KNOW? A damage deposit, plus the first months rent. At least three references." he shakes his head slowly, like it is impossible. "But if one of those references is from the fire Chief I think I can take their first months rent and call it even."

Judith Baldwin walks in and smiles at Petey, hearing the tail end of what he's saying to Hank "Evening Petey." She passes the bar and heads to the table "Erica! What a lovely surprise! I almost forgot you had the interview today." She leans down and hugs her daughter, giving her a kiss on the cheek and then steps around to Hank and kisses him sweetly on the lips "And what poor souls are you helping get into an apartment now dear?"

Erica BaldwinRussell hugs her mom back and then smiles between Petey and Hank, answering before he can "Actually mom...it's Jeff and the girls and I. I just said yes to a job at the Mariners.....well two to be precise. Jeff too...."

Hank Stanley smiles and accepts the kiss. "Good news, eh?" he offers to Judith.

Judith Baldwin beams "Oh you got it! That's wonderful dear! When do you start? I can come over next weekend and help you sort the house...." She looks towards Petey "No wine...but how about gin and tonic? Do you have limes Peter?"

Peter OBrian looks between mother and daughter. "Gin and tonic." he blows out a mock exasperated breath. "With limes no less." he shakes his head. "For you, Judith anything .. but wine ..." he teases and nods. "And the rest of you will have ..." he smiles at Judith. "I can serve yours up with a side of lease." he chuckles.\

Erica BaldwinRussell: Erica smiles at Peter "that would be great. I'll have a beer, whatever's on tap that you recommend." She looks at Hank and then takes her mother's hand "OK I need you to not freak out....but...uh we start on Wednesday. Mr. Meera needs it covered this week or we don't get it. I know it's insane."

Hank Stanley smiles. "Just a beer for me, Pete." he orders. "But they have a home." he assures Judith. "A nice place, separate bedrooms for the girls." he grins. "And completely up to code." he adds.

Judith Baldwin looks at Erica's hand, Peter and then Hank like a deer in the headlights and then blinks and blurts out "THIS Wednesday?! Is HE insane? How can he ask that of a family?!" She lets out a breathy choke at Hank after "You and your code.....I love you Hank...how are they going to do this?" She pats Erica's hand "I'll see if I can take some of my leave days. What does Jeff say?"

Peter OBrian returns with three drinks and a piece of paper. "Addison set this thing up on my phone so I can print documents off on the printer here." he marvels. "Just fill it in. I can show it to you, if you want?" he offers. The paper has spaces for everything with the rent already filled in by the printer. He looks at Judith. "Well, they have a home, at least. Gotta start someplace. And ... well that guy is in a big hurry to take the place over and .. I hear he's a little impatient..."

Erica BaldwinRussell takes the paper and lets go of her mother's hand "Thank you Peter. I would like to see it if I can..." She scans the paper for a second and then looks up at her mother "I know it's fast Mom, but it just feels right. Do you know what I mean?" She head juts at Hank "Sometimes life just chooses the timing right?"

Hank Stanley chuckles. "Fire code is important." he argues. Then he grins at Erica. "If it feels right ....." he looks at Peter. "We'll be fine here. Maybe have some of your lamb stew." he looks eager.

Judith Baldwin looks momentarily indignant at her daughter using her own words against her and then has to laugh "Alright, personal days. I'll make some calls. If I can get three I'll help you get the girls sorted for your first day." She looks at Hank and then Peter "I think three lamb stews. Erica you should eat. Stay well this week..." She exhales.

Peter OBrian laughs. "No problem. Let me get my coat." he looks at a twenty something woman. "Give them whatever they want. I'll be back in a few minutes." he nods at Erica and leaves the table, retrieving his coat from behind the bar and donning it and waiting beside the door for her.

Erica BaldwinRussell stands up and grabs her purse and the paper "I'll be fine Mom.....and thank you Hank...for the reference...." She follows Peter.

Hank Stanley watches Erica leave with Peter. "She seems very exited about this." he observes, mildly.

Judith Baldwin watches after her "I hate the fast timing for her....but I know how much she hates her job. Maybe this is how it has to happen. I'm worried for them though. That's a lot in one week with the girls..." She exhales, fretting and drumming her fingers.

Hank Stanley doesn't seem too concerned. "Well, the girls will be fine, I bet." he reaches for her hand and kisses it. "Sometimes a last minute decision is the best thing you can do." he tells her. "When you said meet today ... I hadn't planned on it ... but I got on that ferry, fell in love and now look at me."

Judith Baldwin melts a bit at his words "I know. I can't stop looking at you...still." She grins "You ready to have all my people in your town?" She teases "You'll have to share me with them more. And what is this Marakesh Meera guy like? Should I be worried about what kind of boss he'll be for the kids?"

Hank Stanley smiles and tightens his grip on her hand. "Bring them all on." he challenges. "And I don't mind. Someday you may just join us all." he quickly moves on. "Oh he's an eccentric old bird. Owns a peacock ... and apparently is demanding his new employees begin on next to no notice."

Judith Baldwin notices his suggestion and his not lingering on it and lets herself be led forward "So he's cocky and high maintenance. I suppose he can't be any worse than the Waterfront crew. I know Erica can hold her own, Jeff too, and they work well together. And Martha....well she can peek in on Martha a bit too. That'll help." She takes a lime and squeezes it into her gin with her free hand and then sips slowly, still happily holding his.

Hank Stanley nods and sips his beer. "Pretty much. He's ... rich. Had a house built out past the old lighthouse. Owns the Graybar building ... that high rise? And yes, she can keep an eye on Martha." he kisses her hand. "Until I can steal you away." he has been encouraging her to leave things ... so she comes to Alexandra with more than she leaves it with.

Judith Baldwin smiles "That's another big life change. I'm not opposed, but I would need to plan a little longer than from now until Wednesday." she winks "Let's help the kids first." She's saying this is a tone that suggests we as a partnership.

Hank Stanley beams. "Well ... then ...." he kisses her hand and moves closer to her. "Start planning. I'm putting you on notice." he places his hand on the back of her neck. "Tell me what you need? Your house is a prefab." it isn't really a question. He's already noticed that. "I just .. ": he blushes a little. "ache for you when your gone." and he moves in for a kiss.

Judith Baldwin feels her heart skip a beat and just stares at him while he talks about this and finally all she can say is a breathy shivering "Hhhaannnnk..." before kissing him deeply, wrapping her arms around him and not caring about the 20 something server who's staring unabashedly at them.

Hank Stanley kisses her back with passion, moaning softly as she speaks his name. He kisses her for a long time, unaware the waitress has even returned.

Judith Baldwin loses herself in the kiss and then breaks it breathlessly and runs her hand over Han's cheek "You want me to live with you...or live with me...I do love my house....but I know you love your boat....I love YOU more than any building though Hank Stanley. It's you that I need...."

Hank Stanley smiles. "And I need you, Judith Baldwin." he breathes. "My apartment is just a place and I can rent it out, as well." he considers. "We own the land on the water ...... ever consider living on the coast?" he teases.

Judith Baldwin laughs "You just want to chuck my house on a truck and move it here? You're a trip and a half my love. Let me think on it. I'd also need to get a job. I'm not quite ready to retire yet..."

Hank Stanley smiles and rests his head against hers. "Alright. You think on it. The school here is very nice. But if you decide not to ... I'll still love you, Judith. And ... neither of us is ready to retire. Yet." he chuckles.

Erica BaldwinRussell walks in, laughing at something Peter was saying as they walked and then sees her mother and Hank all lovied up and ignoring the incoming food and waitress "All right simmer down you two, or we'll all starve!" she teases "I took it...." she looks back at Pete and smiles.

Peter OBrian walks in smiling and laughing. He looks at his waitress. "You've never seen two adults kiss?" he asks. "Or is it that they're the same age as me?" he huffs and nods for her to put the bowls down. "You think I got my daughter off of eBay?" he rolls his eyes. "I see you didn't miss us?" he mock pouts.

Judith Baldwin: Judith blushes and looks up at Erica, Peter and then the waitress "Oh sorry...please don't be shy. Hank is very distracting. It's his fault of course..." she smiles at her daughter "OK then, step one, complete."

Hank Stanley chuckles and blinks, finally seeing the waitress. He watches the red faced girl set the bowls down. "I will take the blame, m'dear." he looks at the waitress. "I've been a lone for 20 years now. But I' not quite dead yet." he looks at Peter. "They didn't Have eBay when we were as young as this one is. Had to have been mail order." he teases.

Erica BaldwinRussell giggles as she takes a bowl happily "Thank you Miss. eBay huh? Oh my god Mom it feels so good to have some of this done. Thank you Peter. You'll meet Jeff tomorrow....I think we'll divide and conquer. He'll come here with the camping gear and I'll work on our house....while I let my kids watch mindless television..." Erica  looks thoughtfully between Hank and her mother. Did he just say 20 years? She slowly chews, thinking on that.

Hank Stanley Peter snorts and rolls his eyes at the waitress as she scampers off. "Damn kids." he grumbles. "If I didn't know for a face she doesn't want the place, I'd hire Addy the second she could serve." he blows out a breath. "Welcome to Alexandra, Baldwin family. I look forward to meeting Jeff." he snorts at Hank. "You're happy and deserve it, friend." he points at him. "One of my first friends here." he heads back onto the kitchen and vanishes.

Judith Baldwin looks at Erica "Let me know if there's any way we can help you tomorrow OK?" She hears Petey and grins looking between he and Hank "Aww, what a sweet pal."

Hank Stanley smiles. "I can also help on Sunday, but Monday I have to work." he explains. And he grins. "He IS a good friend. Lots of good folks." he snaps his fingers. "And he has a daughter that babysits. Addison ..and her friend Fiona. Both of them babysit quite a bit."

Erica BaldwinRussell perks up "Really? OK i'm really starting to love this town already.....I think this is the right choice, for all of us." She digs into her food and just eats now, letting her mother and Hank have their conversation.

Hank Stanley smiles and looks at Judith. "I couldn't agree more." he replies somehow to both Erica and Judith. He winks at Judith and begins to eat, innocently.

Judith Baldwin looks between her beloved man and her wonderful daughter and sighs quietly, nodding at them. This town was beckoning her, more and more each day.

Cooking Class Homework - Vincent and Owen

Owen had been given an assignment in Mrs. Baldwin's cooking class. His group was to earn a culinary passport stamp for the country of Sweden. The group had made meatballs, soup and saffron buns as an in class project. Now Owen had to research and make one recipe on his own, and collect a review from a friend or family member on his presentation of it. Owen chose Vincent over dealing with the teasing of his family. If it turned out, he'd make it again for L too. He had asked his parents if he could get the ingredients for an anchovy potato bake called Jansen's Temptation through their weekly grocery shop and they had agreed. They were also happy NOT to be the guinea pigs. So Owen chose a night when Fi was sleeping over at Addy's, L and Shay had a party for their hockey team, and Vincent's mom worked late. He carted his supplies to Vincent's, grateful he had agreed to all of this, and knocked at the apartment door.

Vincent knew Owen was coming with food he had cooked himself for the cooking class.  He ALSO knew that Owen had been improving.  But he and Owen were friends, and he knew that he was one of the few that could tease Owen a little without his going off.  If his brother Seamus did the same, Owen would go off and that always fascinated Vincent.  He opens the door and reaches for the supplies to help bring them in.  "Come on in."  he commands, taking the bags into the kitchen while Owen takes off his shoes and coat.  He sets the bags down and backs off a little bit, knowing he can't help.  SO its like a test for him, too.

Owen watches Vincent backing off as he comes in after taking off his outdoor stuff and chuckles "No helping. But I got it all on my phone. I just need to follow the recipe........" Owen walks to the sink and washes his hands "Hey Vincent, I know this is none of my business but I'd hate to give my Dad any reason not to like you...since he really seems to....so I'm just going to say it....you guys should know....um that her bed really squeaks eh......I didn't stick around and listen....but I did watch for my folks for a bit....you know the other week." He looks truly awkward about bring it up.

Vincent nods and leans against the counter to watch when Owen mentions that his sister's bed squeaks.  He blinks, for a couple of reasons.  "Wait?  What?"  he straightens.  "I didn't ... we've never.  What?"  he blinks horrified.

Owen looks confused "K buddy, I don't care if you guys do it. ........but it really wasn't you? Fiona doesn't have any other guys who would be in her..." He thinks about it "Maybe it wasn't Fi.....oh god....Daisy was staying with us. Do you think she? I hope to fuckin god it wasn't Joey Piccolo.....they're done right?"

Vincent's jaw drops.  "Of COURSE Fiona doesn't have any other guys ....."  and then, somehow, his jaw drops more.  "Joey and Daisy in Fiona's BED?"  he blinks.  "No ... WAY?"  he blinks.  "Yea, they're done.  Daisy wasn't happy.  And he would never be able to talk his way out of THAT .....  would he?"

Owen looks baffled as he starts washing the potatoes "I dunno...it's all messed up right. I mean it wasn't you guys. I would never even sit on Fiona's bed without her permission. She's a freak about her room and people touching her stuff....well Shay and I anyways....." He looks like a thought crosses his mind and he dismisses it with a head shake "He wouldn't.....she'd fucking pound him if he did....."

Vincent nods and then blinks.  "SHAY?"  he slowly shakes his head, but he follows Owen's thoughts.  "Shay and Daisy in Fiona's bed?"  he blinks.  "It's like a fucked up game of Clue....."  he pauses.  "You could ASK him?"  and he's glad he isn't in a position to be asked to ask.

Owen looks distraught " I know right. And I can't believe it but I'm actually hoping it's Shay...but if it is...we can't tell Fi.....her bed is like some sort of sacred relic and sleep is her religion. I know you don't live with her....but you know future warning....don't ever wake her up...for ANYTHING....seriously...." Owen shakes his head around and starts chopping up an onion.

Vincent snorts.  "I know the religion of sleep and the church of bed."  he turns away a bit, blushing.  "I mean .... hard to say which would be worse.  Joey or Shay ... she'd kill them both ... "  he chuckles.  "Always set an alarm to wake her up."

Owen hesitates for a second at the first part and then slides the chopped onion aside "Well she won't kill Daisy as long as she's carrying an innocent child at least.......Sorry I came home early to sounds I did not expect...I didn't mean to accuse you....just the location." He opens up a can of anchovies and starts chopping them roughly. In the distraction of this intense conversation it seems Owen is just....cooking...without even missing a beat.

Vincent chuckles.  "That helps."  he sighs.  "I'm sorry too, but ... yea .. Fi and I ..."  he watches Owen now and his brows raise.  He considers mentioning that Owen is doing it, then decides that might cause a distraction and Owen might hurt himself.  "Anyway, we don't spend a lot of time in your house alone ... who CAN?"  he teases.  "When no one is home?"

Owen takes it all in stride and just laughs "Someone chanced it. Someone who wasn't thinking carefully. Lucky it was only me....could you imagine if Fi had come home to that...or our parents? Gawd..." Owen looks at his recipe for a second "Holy shit I'm halfway to baking this thing....that went fast..."

Vincent scoffs.  "Someone who wasn't thinking carefully ... sort of implicates Shay even more, huh?"  he mock shudders.  "Which would be worse.  Fi or your Dad?"  he snorts.  "Which is why we don't have sex in Fiona's bed."  he quips.  Then he grins.  "Yea.  Looks like you might just have the hang of it, man."  he compliments.

Owen had moved onto the cheese and was now grating, totally in his groove and had started to answer when his eyes went wide at Vincent for a second and then he looked down and laughed "So I wasn't THAT far off the mark in my guess....still none of my business....yeah cooking...cooking good...." He grumbles the last part out like an awkward neanderthal.

Vincent stiffens a bit, realizes what he's said and flushes.  "Yea.  Well ....  Cooking VERY good."  he agrees and laughs.  "So, I'm guessing you and L aren't there yet?"  he wonders, actually a little curious.  "How would that even work?"  he murmurs, not realizing hes spoken aloud.

Owen starts and knocks over all the potatoes. They roll in every direction and he starts chasing them around "Nope, not there...no rush. Dammit it's still rolling..."

Vincent watches Owen, amused at the whole reaction, up to and including the potato race.  "Yea ...  round stuff does that...."  he grins.  "I didn't mean to make you nervous, although to be fair YOU started talking about sex before I did."

Owen manages to catch them all "That's because I was afraid you had a death wish or something....I don't always know how to answer those questions about L. We had a good but kinda weird sad Valentines Day. I say the L word....and it kinda made L a mess about a bunch of stuff to do with her family. I didn't mean to pick at old wounds....we worked it out but I felt like I was breaking us....all day..." He sighs "I'm still new at all of this.....but I do love L. Hopefully that's enough right?"

Vincent chuckles.  "Well, John and I are getting along better than ever, but I am positive catching me in bed with his daughter would undo every SECOND of it."  and he listens and winces.  "Well ... love heals a lot.  Take it from me."  he considers.  "It changed my live since I moved here."  he pauses.  "Is L afraid of being loved?  Does she .. um ... he .. feel the same way?"  hes still unsure which pronoun to use, but is sure 'it' is definitely wrong.

Owen mixes it all and then grates the potato on top last and sighs "L feels unloved by family. I know you understand that. I don't but I'm trying to. I know how good I have it. My parents have never given any of us reason to question how important we are to them. L did say it back to me after getting upset. Maybe I rushed it. It was just Valentine's day and I just let the words fly."

Vincent nods.  He did understand.  "Think of how your grandfather treated your father."  he suggests.  "How he must have felt.  It might give you an idea."  he shrugs.  "How can you rush it.  If it feels right, go for it.  That's worked more for me than waiting for."  he makes air quotes.  "The right time."

Owen knows his way around Vincent's kitchen after a few cooking nights and digs to find a casserole dish. He scoops the mixture in and then uses measuring spoons to add only the correct amount of seasonings that the recipe calls for "Yeah...I think it's different...but I get it. More neglect than abuse I think. They might not even realize they're doing it. But L has an uncle who's nice at least. I'll try not to totally bomb his French class...." He laughs as he sets the oven temperature and puts the dish in to cook.

Vincent nods.  "Then she's lucky, but that's me."  he groans.  "Oh my god!  Tell me about it!"  he laughs back, pleased to see Owen just following the recipe religiously.  Once the oven door is closed, he mock applauds.  "All the right ingredients and everything."  he nods, impressed.  "And now ...."  he puts a dramatic tone in his voice.  "We wait!"

Owen looks at the oven, amazed at himself "Vincent, it's getting easier.......even the one in class was pretty good and authentic Swedish meatballs are a bit trickier than spaghetti meatballs.....Is it possible I'm not a total disaster anymore?" He laughs at the thought.

Vincent grins.  "I'm not sure you were in the first place."  he argues.  "Your thing was ... you got bored and wanted to spice things up.  Then you went about it like crazy."  he chuckles.  "Moderation, man.  Moderation.  I've been telling you that."

Owen draws his hands up in front of him and then back down "Dude I am totally kitchen zen now. I'm like a Buddhist Italian." He teases.

Vincent laughs.  "Very cool!  Do you like it?  Maybe you can get a job in one of the kitchens around here?  Or you gonna try and get one at all."

Owen thinks "Well I have a flier route for now....maybe something else in the summer. Are you working? Oh the music right? You've sold lots of albums..."

Vincent nods.  "Yea.  The music.  That pays so well I don't have to do it for long periods of time.  Plus when I'm 16 I can probably work at 13 in White Rock as a waiter or in the kitchen."  he blows out a breath.  "But that's still a year away."  he grouses.  "I have money saved but still.  At least I don't have to worry about having to get my own apartment anymore."

Owen looks around "Yeah that's cool... this is cool. You're in a sort of Avengers tower up here. Like Tony Stark but with kitchen gadgets... 13 huh? I hear it's kinda swanky."

Vincent smiles and looks out of the window.  With Fiona being absent the curtains are thrown wide.  "Man I LOVE it up here."  he admits.  "But I HAD been thinking of those small apartments .. maybe like the one over the print shop.  Cause it would only be me ... and maybe later Fiona, you know.  Ironically enough the ones on the water are cheap because of the ferry blocking the view so often ... and its whistle or horn or whatever that noise is."  he then grins.  "My uncle Vincent owns 13.  And yea ... its gonna be the best Italian food in the area!"

Owen looks impressed "Oh wow! So like a guaranteed job basically. Nice!"

Vincent nods.  "Well ... it'll get me through college, along with the music industry.  I figure by the time Fiona graduates, and with both of us working through college, we can probably live together in decent comfort."  clearly he's been thinking on this.

Owen looks amazed "You and Fi have talked about the future this much?" He's hoping these ideas are mutual. He likes Vincent and they seem really in love. It would be cool if it went that way.

Vincent looks a little sheepish.  "Not yet."  he admits.  "But my plan had originally been to get out from under Gino by the time I was 16.  Fiona knows that much."  he considers.  "I don't know what the future holds, but Fiona is in it.  I hope.  Both of us want a lot of the same things and I already know I want to marry her and have kids with her."  he bites his lip.  "Think it's weird to want to marry someone LONG before you plan on kids and stuff?"

Owen smiles a little "Nah it's sweet. Have fun before kids. My parents barely get a break, maybe now that we're all older a bit better but all they did was work and take care of us. Maybe if they had more time before us they wouldn't have almost split up right? Hey man...got any pop?"

Vincent nods.  "My parents had a shotgun wedding.  Might have been an actual shotgun involved, too."  he laughs a little.  "I don't want that.  My plan was maybe live together through college, then marry and kids after college."  he shrugs and heads for the fridge, opening it despite its clear door.  "Then again I planned to save myself for marriage in the first place and that didn't happen."  he peers in.  "Mountain Dew and cola."  he takes a Mountain Dew for himself and holds the fridge door open for Owen to choose.

Owen reaches for the cola and blushes a little "Save yourself? Like a religious thing?" He chuckles and then backs out of the open fridge door almost hearing his mother's voice on the matter of fridge doors somewhere in the recesses of his mind.

Vincent closes the fridge door, laughing.  "Well, I AM Catholic ... technically."  he admits.  "But no.  Not having sex until my wedding night, sort of thing.  But .... yea .... that ... was ..."  he blushes a little as he opens his pop.  "Impossible to resist."

Owen grimaces "This IS my SISTER you're talking about." He laughs awkwardly "But yeah I hear the same thing from Seamus...so I guess that's how it goes once you pass a certain point." He helps himself to a glass from the cupboard and then  hands one to Vincent too and pours the cola.

Vincent shrugs.  "Yea ... I know it is.  But if you had the idea you heard us having sex in Fiona's bed ...."  he lets the sentence die a natural death.  "And ... Seamus is right.  After a certain point ... you CAN say no, but its not easy."  he takes the glass and fills it.  "Hashtag cold shower."

Owen snorts "Hashtag. Nice......" He chugs back some cola fast and then lets out a long wicked belch. It looks like it was truly satisfying and he pats his chest after "Oh yeah!"

Vincent laughs and drinks as well, parroting his friend, but not as loudly.  He sighs.  "I'll never be as good as you are, man." he laments.

Owen dramatically bows and then takes another big sip and shows off a little, burping the alphabet to the letter L. He coughs after and laughs at the irony "I'm not sure if L would be flattered or disgusted by that one."

Vincent listens, but this time doesn't even try to do the same.  "Depends on which L you're dealing with?"  he sips and looks innocent.  "Might outdo you.  I've heard she's ... he's ...  um ... made a hell of an impression on the hockey team."

Owen smiles and shrugs "Yeah both. I'm pretty used to it now. Although L and Shay hanging out all the time sometimes gets on my nerves. I don't love the idea of L confiding in Shay about stuff to do with...us....it feels like a crossover that I don't know how to make."

Vincent arches his brows.  "Really?"  he considers that.  "Would Shay keep secrets from you?  Man ....  I can see ... that's strange.  But Shay wouldn't keep anything IMPORTANT from you, right?"

Owen looks conflicted "I dunno...lately...maybe. I mean he had a whole secret life going on before you and Dad busted that chapter open and we all found out. Hopefully that just lets him be honest now. But more than ever he's been taking his little digs at me...I mean you wouldn't see it. He makes it look nice, like he's taking the high road, but I know he's not. I just don't want there to be a day when it involves L. I worry L will just think I'm being a dick again then...because god knows my brother can bring that out in me more than ANYONE...."

Vincent considers and looks thoughtful.  "I don't know.  I never see any of that."  in a way he is glad to be an only child.  "But ... aren't you still brothers at the end of it all?"

Owen sighs and nods "We are. I think I'm still adjusting to the changes in him. His moods are not so allover the place at least lately. In fact the last few weeks he's been pretty cheerful. Probably a girl...or two... I dunno. Maybe L knows. It was her roommate for awhile. I think it still is. Maybe it's just going better than that Sam girl."

Vincent nods.  "Maybe it was all about hiding his relationship with Sam?"  he speculates.  "I see him around with that new girl.  Candy or something.  But he's also tutoring.  He hasn't made a pass at me ... but then again I'd reject him and Fiona would put him in the hospital."  he laughs.  "But its more responsibility and maturity and .... he can't be the big jock hockey player forever, can he?"

This hits a note with Owen that has been a worry "No but you're a dude.....Shay likes girls, and half the time at least...L presents as one....I try not to think too hard about that...." H tosses back another sip as if to cleanse his mind of the idea.

Vincent blinks.  "He wouldn't!" he predicts.  "I mean .. if they ARE besties...."  he shakes his head.  "That's be like ... like ... Fiona and Addison or .. or .. me and you.  Not happening, even if she DOES present as a girl sometimes."  but he, too considers it.   His current seemed pretty feminine, but before that he'd been with Sam .. who was a very boyish girl.

This actually manages to cheer Owen up about it and he pretends to jump step back from Vincent "No offense man....but you're not my type....not that I have a type." He laughs awkwardly.

Vincent shakes his head.  "None taken, believe me."  he bites his lip.  "Okay ... can I ask you a personal question, Owen?  It's none of my business, but ... I admit I'm curious about it."

Owen looks curious at the curiosity "Sure, what?" He leans back on the counter casually.

Vincent takes a breath.  "You might have sex with L someday .... what happens if she's in boy mode?"  he lifts his hands.  "I mean ... if you love all of L, then ... wouldn't you have to be like .. bi sexual?"  he frowns not in disapproval, but in clear confusion.

Owen looks as confused at Vincent "I honestly don't know. I feel like a bit of a heel sometimes. I mean, I mostly straight. I say mostly only because of L....but if the biological base wasn't female, would I have had an attraction? I'm not sure.....I feel a little closed minded about that aspect of myself. And as to what would happen in what mode...I'm not sure L knows either..."

Vincent tries to process it.  "Yea ... I ... don't know man.  I just find I can't wrap my mind around it."  he shrugs and then laughs.  "I don't want footage anymore than you probably do, but ... it's an interesting concept to me.  Gay I get ... I even get bi ... but both in one person ... I can't ..."  he taps his head.  "Visualize it."  he considers it and, as he expects someday that he and Owen will be brothers in law, isn't sure he should even want to be able to see it in his minds eye.

Owen gulps "We'll cross that bridge when we get to it. But it's a ways off. Maybe I still need to work on opening up my mind a bit....the heart is there though." He grins "I should check our food..." He walks to the oven and opens the door, peering in. It smells scrumptious but isn't quite browned as it's supposed to be yet "A bit more time I think."

Vincent grins and nods.  "The heart has to come first.  At least with guys like us."  he nods and stands, then leans back.  "Don't hover, Vincent."  he tells himself.

Owen laughs and makes helicopter noises at Vincent and then asks "Hey have you gone up in your mom's chopper yet? Don't take Fi...but that would be wicked.."

Vincent throws a mock punch at Owen's arm.  "Ass."  but he's laughing.  Then he gets serious.  "No.  But I would LOVE to."  he sighs.  "I know Fiona would never go with me.  That's one thing where we're complete opposites.  But so many other ways its so perfect."

Owen shrugs "You can't have everything in common. Fi's always been afraid of heights. With me it's needles. Everyone has their thing. What's your Kryptonite Vincent?"

Vincent nods in agreement.  "Well, at least I don't love heights so much it effects our relationship."  he shudders.  "Me?  Spiders.  Definitely spiders.  Big or small ....  spiders."

Owen almost falls over "Seriously? Dude, you didn't tell me! I've gone on about Sebastian...holy shit I'm so sorry!"

Vincent blushes and shrugs.  "No, its OK ....  I haven't seen him, by the way and I just tell myeslf your talking about Sebastian Knight .... so ... I can delude myself its a human and not a spider.  Probably like the trick of closing the drapes here when Fiona's over so she can think we're on the second floor or something."

"Oh the singer?" Owen laughs "Yeah I was totally talking about him...living in a little cage in my room. the ultimate fan stalker...." He cracks up "He's pretty kick ass. Have you heard his new stuff. It's all birds but powerful stuff."

Vincent laughs.  "Hey, leave me my delusions!"  he demands.  He nods.  "I've heard it.  Don't OWN any of it but ... its not bad.  Guy really had a hard on for birds.  Or it means something else probably."  he chuckles.  "OK, check it now.  I mean ... Sorry.  I'm trying not to interfere.  Anal."  he chides himself.

Owen cracks up and walks to the stove "Shoulda brought the exlax...I got this." He opens the oven "Oh yeah that there look like food stuff." He gestures fro Vincent to look "What do you think?"

Vincent laughs and approaches.  "Nice!"  he proclaims and takes his phone out of his jeans and takes a picture.  "No flames or ANYTHING."  he nods.  "OK, take it out, let it cool a little and feed me."  he pffts.  "I never thought I would ever say those words to you, Owen."

Owen does a little dance and then takes it out and then sets it on the stove top. He then jokingly makes a show of watching the clock.

Vincent takes another picture and thumb types.  "Sending this to Fiona ... "  he reports.  "Granted, I haven't eaten it yet, but .. looks good and smells GREAT!"  he looks at the clock.  "If this was bread I wouldn't care if it was piping hot."  he laughs.

Owen laughs and goes to find plates, forks and a serving utensil. He gives it another two minutes actually counting down until he scoops in and plates up and then carries both plates to the table "OK, provided you don't die, can you give me a quote after for your review. And the pictures! I can email this assignment in....you know...cause it's already late." He admits with an innocent smile.

Vincent watches and brings silverware.  "Alright ... so no blowing it off, eh?"  he loads up his fork and blows to cool his food, taking his time and teasing Owen.  And then he outs the food in his mouth and chews, not moving ... only chewing.

Owen watches Vincent looking amused and then takes a bite himself and his eyes go wide as he smacks the table with his free hand. After he chews and swallows he exclaims "Holy fuck...I made FOOD!"

In the Best Interests - Dolores, Daisy, Vincent, Darcy and Josh

February 16th

Dolores Spanner looked around her office as she waited for the student to be called and appear in her office.  Unconventionally, her furniture was purple, as were many things around the office.  She even had a small purple lace doily on a side table.  Overall it was very feminine.  Delores herself was known as a rather severe woman, both in look and manner.  Small and painfully thin, her hair was tied in a severe bun at the back of her head.  Members of her Hall Monitor program had reported to her that she was seen in many ways as Minerva McGonagal somehow tragically crossed with Delores Umbridge.  She didn't see the movies, so she really didn't know.  All she knew was that she had kept the reputation of Alexandra Academy spotless for thirty years and would continue in that tradition .... no matter what.
no plus ones

Daisy nervously walked into the office after being shuffled by the secretary. She clutched the strap of her fuchsia backpack as if for dear life. Ms. Spanner had always terrified her and her emotions were running high. She had been barely making it to school every morning as it was but she hadn't been late or missed a test or assignment yet so she wasn't sure why she was in trouble. She tried to find a greeting in her mind that sounded contrite and all she could come out with was "Hi?" Oh that wasn't very good at all. Stupid Daisy!

Looking up from her desk as the girl walks in, Delores offers her a grin.  "Please.  Miss Dale.  Close the door.  Do have a seat."  she motions to one of the chairs in front of her desk and then folds her hands in front of her.

Daisy purses her lips and walks to close the door before sitting. she drops her backpack between her feet and nervously clutches her knees with her hands, looking at the edge of the desk.

Clasping her hands before her, Delores looks at Daisy with a smile that is almost predatory.  "I've heard you have something to tell me, Miss Dale."  she announces.  "So I will give you this opportunity to confess, before I am forced to confront you with the ugly truths I have heard."  her voice is calm, but ... somehow dark.

Daisy frowns "I don't know what you mean Ma'am." It crosses her mind she could be talking about the pregnancy but then she dismisses it. how would Spanner know? Not that many people know. Maybe this is about one of Joey's stupid fights.

"Oh, you don't?"  Delores asks, her voice taking on a sarcastic edge used by adults accusing children of lying to their faces.  Eyes on Daisy, Delores opens a laptop on her desk.  It's purple, of course, and fiddles a bit with it.  Turning it to the young girl, a video player program can be seen, paused footage, apparently from a cell phone camera, at a scene where Joey Piccolo is reaching out for Daisy's neck.  Delores taps the space bar and Joey's voice comes through the laptop's speakers.  "Don't you walk away from me, Daisy."  Joey snaps.  "You get rid of that kid NOW.  I'm not paying for YOUR mistake."  The video goes on through the rest of the ... conversation, stopping only when Arthur VanBuren's voice booms,  "Alright, boys, break it up."  the recording then ends and Delores looks across her desk at Daisy.  "Am I to understand that you are pregnant, Miss Dale?"

Daisy shrinks back from the laptop at Joey's horrible words and shudders, eyes filling with tears "Why do you HAVE this recorded? Yes I am, but I'm handling it. I'm still getting all my work done..." She seems really shaken by seeing this again and reliving it.

Arching a brow, Delores defends herself.  "I didn't record it.  It WAS recorded.  This IS the age of cameras everywhere.  Let's be happy this isn't on the Internet, shall we?"  she closes the laptop and smiles.  "Now, what are we going to do about your .... problem?"  she asks, sounding suspiciously like Joey in a way.  "This school has a fine reputation.  We can't have it tarnished, Miss Dale."

Daisy looks confused by the question and sentiment "It won't be obvious for awhile. I'm not sure why this is the school's problem. It affects my life way beyond school."

Pursing her lips in distaste, Dolores looks at the young mother-to-be.  "Word gets around, Miss Dale.  Rumors begin and persist.  And, as you point out, in a few months it will be blatantly obvious exactly what kind of girl you are."  she lifts her head.  "Girls like you set a bad example to the student body."  she looks at Daisy as if that should be obvious.

Daisy starts to protest at first but then starts physically deflating. Ms Spanner is feeding her insecurities. "What do you think I should do then?" Her voice is suddenly smaller?"

A victorious smile appears on Dolores's face.  She'd been afraid that this obvious little harlot would put up a fight.  "It's the end of the school day.  Clean out your locker and go home.  I'm sure you need your rest.  I'll see what I can do for you."  which would ultimately to list the girl as a dropout.  She sounds as if she's offering up salvation on a silver platter.  "Maybe classes from ... home."  where no one would see her.

Daisy awkwardly picks up her backpack and stands, at a loss for words. She doesn't trust any of this but isn't sure what her options are. Can she just do this? Daisy gives the principal a non descript nod and heads for the door.

Standing from her desk, Delores moves to the door, opening it for the unfortunate girl.  Knowing who her mother was, this was an inevitable waste of lives ... seemed to be a family curse.  "Take care, Miss Dale."  she calls after.

Daisy walks down the hall a little dazed as if she might have dreamed this all. She ends up at her locker and opens it looking at what would need to come out to empty it. With robotic movements she starts filling her backpack and then her gym bag and stacking things. As she packs more the tears come and eventually she's in a sobbing heap again on the floor in front of the locker, a lost scared girl. School at home? In her mother's house? She can't imagine being able to work there when her mom hits her next bender.

Vincent is heading down the hall, glad to see the end of this day with half the homework he expected.  He spots Daisy on the floor in front of her locker and moves to her quickly, kneeling beside her.  It looks like she is rearranging everything.  "Hey."  he says to her, looking at everything around her.  "Spring cleaning?"  the groundhog saw his shadow, so it was possible she was one of those.  But didn't pregnant women 'nest'?

Daisy shakes her head and slumps forward at Vincent's question "She told me to go....to clean out my locker. Work from home......so I don't shame the school for the type of...." She does quotes in the air "Girl I am." Daisy sniffs and then tries to shove a too big binder in her already overstuffed backpack.

Vincent's brows raise in disbelief.  The words were stupid and wrong on more levels than he could count.  But it didn't sound like her mother.  Then he remembered Addison complaining that Spanner had complained to her in the nicest ways possible that she wasn't feminine enough.  And other girls about little things.  Skirt length and showing too much leg.  Flirting with boys.  But he'd never heard of anyone being thrown out of school for it.  "Girl you ...."  he begins to repeat and then shakes his head.  He puts his arms around her shoulders.  "Come on.  Put all this stuff back in your locker.  I think we need to go talk to my mom."  he tells her and begins to put the stuff right back IN the girls locker.

Daisy lets Vincent take the lead on this. She has no emotional energy left after her talk in the office. She lets go of the bag and lets it be taken after she fishes a small purse out of it and puts on her jacket. Wiping her eyes she asks hopelessly "What can your mom do?"

Vincent sort of shoves everything into the locker and gets the door shut.  "I have absolutely NO idea."  he admits as he puts his arm around her and begins to lead her to the school entrance, heedless of who might be watching and what they might think.  "But this sounds illegal and my mom's a cop."  he pauses just outside the school doors to send a quick text to Fiona, so she knows why he isn't meeting her, as usual.

Daisy lets herself be steered by Vincent and notices the many eyes on them and whispers as they leave the building. She looked ahead, trying to ignore it, but hoped it wasn't going to cause Vincent any trouble later. She walked in silence with him for a long time and then finally started telling him about what happened "Spanner had a video of Joey and I....when I told him I was pregnant. She said I should be thankful it wasn't on the internet, that someone had filmed it and given it to her......"

Vincent keeps his arm around her, because she looks like she could use the comfort and, even while thinking of the day she asked him out and his rejection of her, and how she had talked around about what her mother had seen of him naked, he still thought she could use some comfort.  He sighs deeply and groans.  "Yea, well .. that kind of shit gets on YouTube and shit, but that's not the point.  Is she trying to shame you into dropping out of school?  That HAS to be illegal."  he realizes vaguely that some of what he always thought of as Darcy's moral righteousness seems to be rubbing off on him.

Daisy thinks "She said I could do it from home.....I'm not sure if she meant through the school or some kind of correspondence thing. Vincent I won't be showing for quite awhile and teenagers get pregnant ALL the time. I'm not sure why this is such a scandal to her. My mom had me when she was 15...not here obviously, if it's so shocking to people..." She scoffs.

Vincent nods.  "Maybe, but ... that HAS to be illegal, Daisy and you shouldn't have to go to school at home if you don't NEED to?  There's a perfectly good school here in town.  Well .. not perfect, obviously but."  he motions to the school as they turn onto Central.  "But no matter what, it's not like you have some communicable disease or .. or ... or .... something!"  he protests as they walk the short distance, cross 2nd and stand in front of the Alexandra Police Department.  "Maybe my mom can tell you what to do, cause this is really wrong!  My mother was pregnant with me at 16 and still finished high school, but .. yea .. not here ..." he sighs.

Daisy shrugs "My mom didn't but I don't think she wanted to. But I don't want to try and study at home. Home is not quiet and stable enough to get any work done......" She stepped forward from Vincent and pushed the door open to the police station and then looked completely overwhelmed as the idea of talking to Vincent's mom sunk in as the reality of being in the police station itself.

Darcy stands mindlessly in front of the copy machine waiting on an endless stack of forms spitting out. She sipped a coffee and glanced out the window at Martha Bloom shuffling along seeming to mutter to herself and snapping like she was trying to recall something. Darcy sighed. Such a sweet lady to have that struggle to hang on to her day to day world.

Vincent almost smiles ot himself as Daisy takes the initiative to open the door and go in.  Almost.  He follows her and spots Mert, immediately.

"Hi, Vincent!"  her voice is unnaturally loud, but her smile is bright and friendly.

But Vincent avoids wincing at the noise and smiles at her.  "Hi Mert."  he looks behind her at Darcy.  It wasn't like he had to ask if she was in.

Daisy jumps a little at Mert's voice and steps back like she might try and sneak out but the idea is halted by Darcy noticing she and Vincent and walking over.

Darcy drops the stack of forms on her desk and then hears Mert greet Vincent, because how can you not. She smiles at him and walks forward "Hey kid. What are you...." She notices a petite blonde now behind him. The girl is literally a younger version of Kenzie Dale so it has to be Daisy Dale. Darcy looks between them and then kindly says "Hi Daisy. Can I help either of you?"

Vincent reaches for Daisy's hand when she jumps.  Mert took a lot of getting used to.  He looks at Darcy when she steps forward.  "Can we talk to you, Darcy Mom?"  he asks.  "Something .... came up at school?"

Josh Greene steps out of the Chief's office, holding an empty coffee cup in one hand and the bridge of his nose with the other.  He moves to the coffee maker and pours, having noted their visitors and glancing at the clock.  School just let out, so it isn't truancy.  But he catches the mention of the school and sort of loiters.

Darcy looks curiously at them. Vincent doesn't appear to have any injuries so it's not a  fight. And the school hasn't called. She beckons them in "Come sit at my desk. Daisy, we haven't met. I'm Officer Lynch...here anyways." She drags two plastic chairs to her work area. Darcy had seen Josh but didn't pull him into the fray, suspecting he was tuning in from his vantage point.

Daisy squeezes Vincent's hand and then lets go. It's very sweet of him but his mom is watching them and he has a girlfriend, and Fiona is now a friend too. She nods at Darcy and follows "Nice to meet you Officer Lynch. Vincent thinks the principal said something to me..." She settles into the chair "Thanks....that might be illegal."

Vincent sits and watches, ready to support Daisy.

Josh sighs happily as he drinks some coffee, and reaches into his pocket when he hears the word illegal in conjunction with the principal.  Dolores Spanner.  Taking out a bottle of Tylenol, he takes two.

Darcy leans forward, making eye contact with Daisy, making sure she knows she's being heard "OK. Tell me about that?"

Daisy takes a deep breath and exhales nervously "Well.....I'm pregnant. No, I didn't plan it....and not that many people know. But Ms. Spanner had someone give her a video of me telling...someone..." she gulps "And she told me I should clean out my locker and do school from home because I'm bad for the school reputation."

Darcy blinks and then shakes her head "Were those her EXACT words?"

Daisy nods "Pretty much. Can she do that? Can she kick me out of school? I'm still getting my work done. I won't show for a long time yet..."

Darcy shakes her head gravely "No, she can't legally kick you out Daisy. The music program is in the private sector but the academic side is in the public sector, which means if you live in the catchment area of the island, they have to accept your enrollment and educate you."

Vincent listens and nods in approval, as if he knew anything about it, except that even if he got kicked out of the music program, he could still go to the Academy.

Josh listens and finally turns his head in the direction of Darcy and the kids sitting by her desk.  He tightens his jaw and steps to them.  "Officer Lynch is right."  he tells her, his face more or less neutral.    "But Delores Spanner has pulled this in the past.  A couple of times at least."  he looks at Daisy.  "I'm Lieutenant Greene.  Good to meet you both."  he is practicing his diplomacy while he can.

Daisy looks shocked "Hello Lieutenant Greene. She has? and she still works there? How does THAT work?" Daisy is starting to look angry about the whole thing now that she knows it's wrong.

Darcy defers to her Lieutenant after a nod to the kids "So what's the recourse Sir? Do we have the jurisdiction or is this a civic matter for the mayor's office? Do we have to contact the school board and seek a superintendent? This is a new one for me...."

Vincent looks interested, but remains quiet.

Josh nods.  "She's done it at least twice in the last 15 years that I know of."  he admits.  "And she still works there because 15 years ago and even 8 or so years ago, peoples perceptions were different.  Teenage pregnancy was not as acceptable as it is now."  he tightens his jaw a moment and looks over at Darcy.  "It's a civil manner, BUT."  he raises his coffee mug.  "If attention is brought to bear, Spanner may make a move on her own to make this more public.  Not something the new mayor is going to need."  he raises his coffee mug again.  "But ... I think we can handle this internally.  I know the parents on the school board.  And Arthur VanBuren."  he looks at the kids.  "I think we can handle this quietly.  Yes, I know I sound like a politician.  But if she makes noise, it can go badly for not only the school and the island, but you as well."  he considers, sipping more of his coffee.

Daisy catches on to what Josh is saying and nods "So I should make like I'm cleaning out my locker or just take some time off until it goes through the proper channels?"

Darcy looks between Josh and Daisy. This girl was much smarter than her mother, who she'd dealt with on some parking tickets and minor citations before. She caught onto subtlety and jumping through hoops to make the system work.

Vincent smiles and keeps nodding.  He was feeling he'd done the right thing bringing Daisy here.

Josh smiles.  "Exactly.  Go home for a few days.  I'll take the flack IF anyone tries to call you truant."  he pauses and lowers his coffee mug.  "Are you still living at home?"  he asks, sounding concerned.  It's a small town.  He didn't know this girl had been pregnant, but he DID know her mother and several of the less than stellar Alexandra citizens she'd been associated with in the past.

One thing Daisy was adamant on was protecting her mother from CFS so she answered almost too fast "Yes Sir I am. I live with my mother Kenzie Dale. It's not much but she takes care of us." It was barely the truth outside of having a roof over her head but Daisy would make this work. She smiled contritely at the lieutenant and folded her hands in her lap.

Darcy looked sideways at Daisy and smiled, but her eyes were suspicious. Was this kid playing Josh? She remembered what Vincent had said about her mother. She also knew the kind of record Kenzie actually had, hardly the responsible mother profile. But she wasn't going to put her on the spot "Well let us know if you need anything Daisy. We can help you...both if you need it." She stole a quick look at Vincent. This was an awkward situation for him to be in but she was glad he was helping this girl.

Vincent's eyes widened and he blinked, but tried to recover.  He replied to Darcy.  "Yea.  Well you know I'll help you out.  But you also have Fiona and Addy."  he offers.

Josh listens to her and laughs.  "Don't worry, Daisy.  I just wanted to make sure you had a roof over your head, even if it has a couple of holes in it."  he tells her.  "I'm not calling anyone but the school board."  he pauses.  "But if for some reason CFS comes calling, get in touch with this station IMMEDIATELY."  he looks at Darcy.  If Spanner wanted to cause this child trouble, that's one way she can do it.  "Tell them to call me, no matter the hour."  he looks at Daisy.  "We'll work this out."  it seems a slightly odd thing for the Lieutenant to say.  "Now, if you'll excuse me, I have to go and make a couple of phone calls."  he winks, waves to them and heads back to his office.

Daisy's eyes go wide as the Lieutenant just comes out and calls her bluff. Then she looks down awkwardly and says quietly "Yes Sir. Thank you." I guess it was stupid to think that the cops didn't know. Some of them had been to their apartment, sometimes for her mom's drunken public mischief and sometimes for the violence of some of the men she had brought home when the neighbours complained. Her mother got just as nasty and violent back to the men and garnered a few assault charges of her own. Daisy often wondered how it would have gone with Joey if she was more like her mom.

Darcy actually looks visibly relieved that Greene knows but also curious about his demeanor with Daisy and his words. After a thinking frown she turns to Daisy and Vincent "Yes, friends. Rely on your friends Daisy. I'm glad Vincent is among them." She gives him a little smile "You guys can wander and I'll check in with the Lieutenant. Daisy...if you want to leave us your cell number, we can call you with information as we get something more tangible." She passes her a pen and a small pad of paper.

Daisy nods and writes down the number "Thank you Officer Lynch....and Vincent."

Vincent looks relieved.  Daisy's mother had a reputation.  After all, she had dated Gino.  He stands as Daisy writes her number down.  "Lets go to Earthcakes."  he suggests.  "Because sugar makes everything better."  and he heads out with her.

Josh sits at his desk and starts with text messages to John Reinhardt, one member of the school board.  Good choice, because John tell him that Daisy has stayed with his family and can fill in a few more detains ... including who the father of Daisy Dale's baby is.  After that he hangs up and sips at his coffee again.  Sometimes kids made the damnedest mistakes.

Daisy leaves with Vincent looking cheered up a bit by the idea of both sweets and company. "I'm going to text Fi and Addy to see if they want to meet us there. Talk to you soon Officer Lynch."

Darcy waves as the kids go and the approaches Josh's office. The door is still open so she does an awkward leer in and knock "Do you have a moment to debrief Lieutenant?"

Josh turns his head and nods, motioning her in.  He has been behind this desk in a temporary capacity before but soon it will be permanent.  "Sure.  Come in and close the door."  he tells her.  Once she does, he leans back.  "Tell me what YOU know, Lynch."

Darcy sits after closing the door and starts "I don't know a lot about Dolores Spanner other than this incident and Vincent mentioning she doesn't like girls and shames them about clothing choices. I thought she might be some sort of religious zealot but clearly it goes deeper. As for Daisy, I did know she was pregnant. Joey Piccolo is the father but not being supportive. Daisy has a less than ideal home life to begin with too. Should I be aware of more?"

Josh listens and sighs.  "Well, Piccolo is trouble.  You know the type.  As for Spanner..."  he pauses.  "She's been the principal there for twenty years almost.  And she's shamed a couple of pregnant teens into panics before."  he clears his throat.  "One of them was my daughter.  Long story short, Spanner used my position, and her mother's to add to the shame of a teenage mother on a small town island.  My daughter ran away, then my wife left, but not to find her."  he clears his throat, gruffly.  "The other girl was from a religious family, but Spanner shamed her so badly she opted to abort.  Needless to say that did not go over well with her family and she wound up in another school.  Vancouver I think.  With Daisy ... there isn't much family to ruin, but I can't let her ruin another young girls life."  he pauses and sighs again.  "Too much information?"  he wonders.

Darcy listens to it all with patience and empathy and then says "I'm so sorry Sir. I had no idea." It would be futile to ask if he's looked for his daughter. She suspects he's done everything he can. "We'll make sure Daisy gets all the help she needs."

Josh nods.  "Well, this is a small town where sometimes the people will respect the very painful things and not turn it into part of the historical record."  he looks at her.  "We will.  I'll be talking to the members of the school board and then we'll talk to VanBuren.  I've heard he's more popular than Spanner anyway.  With luck, she will quietly resign and go ... live someplace else."

Darcy nods respectfully "I hope so. I really do. Ms Spanner has no place in administration if she's going to abuse the position like that. Mr. VanBuren is the administrator I've had an exchange with and he seems more than competent. Vincent likes him too, even after a suspension from him. He got in a fight with Joey Piccolo over how he treated Daisy when she told him she was pregnant. Just to be clear on the reason for the suspension."

Josh nods, slowly.  "Arthur is a good man."  he agrees and them he arches his brows.  "Is that why he got suspended?"  he shrugs.  "I'm sure you handled that well.  Personally I probably would have tried to walk that fine line.  Grounded in a room full of your favorite things."  he scoffs.  "Kids can be difficult, I know.  From what I've seen, you're doing a fine job."

Darcy grins "Pretty much winging it but thanks." She jokes. "How's the big chair fitting by the way?" Darcy had clearly settled in. She was cracking jokes to commanding officers and more than anywhere in recent years, this town was feeling like a home. The unanticipated creation of a family was cementing that.

Josh chuckles.  "You're welcome."  he sits back in the chair with a sigh.  "It fits.  Technically I should have gotten the job years ago but ...  Adum needed it and I didn't want the responsibility.  My own personal shit, if you know what I mean.  But ...."  he chuckles.  "Fred and Adum both decided I could do it."  he folds his hands.  "Actually it was probably Fred."  he snorts.  "Much as people bitch about Sewid ... he has had his reasons for being such an insufferable ass hole over the years.  I guess I did too."

Darcy smiles and then it fades as she decides to ask the awkward question once and for all "Your family....your daughter. Do you have any contact now at all? If it's not out of line for me to ask...Sir."

Josh considers.  This woman was part of their shift.  Like its twin in the Fire Department, they were a family.  So this bunch knew more about him than anyone, possibly.  And it was testament to the family that none of the others; not Sharp or Wright or any of the others, had told her anything of his past, even if they knew.  "My wife divorced me.  She didn't speak to me but to demand alimony ... because Rachel .. my daughter ... didn't go with her.  After her first remarriage, the alimony stopped, but I had an idea what she was up to.  Same old, if you know what I mean."  he shrugs.  "She made Kenzie Dale look like a nun."  he sighs and ran a hand over his bald head.  "Rachel ... vanished.  I spent a lot of money for a lot of years on investigators but ... they figured she'd changed her name and maybe gone off the grid so I couldn't find her.  So I don't know what happened to her.  I used to make the rounds once a year, hoping cops in other cities could find her but .... nothing."

Darcy sighs deeply "I'm sorry. That's unbelievable. But you're still doing this...here helping people every day, making a difference for another young woman. That's amazing if you don't mind my saying."

Josh gives a half smile.  "I don't mind.  Thank you."  he accepts.  "I guess ... I ... wonder how shitty a father I could have been for my daughter to think she couldn't come to me."  he sighs.  "Maybe it was just because I was a cop.  I don't know.  But ... I try and make it up with other kids?"  he sounds unsure about his own words.

Darcy frowns "Oh no...Sir that was not what I meant at all. I'm sure you were great. Sometimes even that isn't enough. It's complicated."

Josh sits up a bit.  "Well ... what DID you mean, Lynch?"  he wonders.  "Am I missing something?"  he feels that was the theme to his experience as a father.  If he can't do it with his underlings as Chief ...

Darcy feels like she's really stepped in it, without even trying "You can have a screwed up kid with a loving parent or parents. I mean we've seen it in our work. It's not always the fault of the parenting. I just meant you helping another kid in your daughters situation honours your daughter whether she's aware of it or not.'

Josh relaxes.  "Oh ... yea .. sorry."  he apologizes.  "I guess I'm STILL not over it.  But it feels like a failure."  he strokes his chin.  "I never thought about it like that."  he sighs.  "It's ... rough .. not knowing what happened.  To her.  To her baby.  My grandchild."  he shrugs, lightly, but clearly it's something he's thought about for years.

Darcy nods slowly "I can only imagine how horrible that is. I hope wherever they are, they're both OK." She looks down feeling both sad for Josh and a little awkward about her side of the conversation.

Josh can understand.  He rolls his shoulders.  "Hope springs eternal.'  he replies.  "But for now, Spanner is my problem.  And I still have a little POLICE work to do.  So lets end this little coffee break, shall we."  he orders, but offers a slight smile anyway.

Darcy nods more formally and stands, but with a little smile too "Yes Sir. Thank you. I have a small stack of reports to tackle now."
